Baseball Evens Pac-10 Series With 16-11 Win At No. 2 Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Freshman Joey Metropoulos' three-run homer in the first started a six-run inning Saturday and the USC Trojans defeated the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal, 16-11, in Pac-10 Conference action at Sunken Diamond. The Trojans led 11-0 at one point after scoring six in the first and five in the second to even the series.
USC improved to 20-15 overall and 6-2 in Pac-10 play while Stanford fell to 24-8 overall and 3-2 in Pac-10 action. With Arizona State's loss this afternoon at UCLA, the Trojans move into first place by a one half-game margin over the Sun Devils.
Freshman Matt Chico (5-3) got the win for the Trojans, allowing seven runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Tim Cunningham (5-2) took the loss for the Cardinal after allowing nine runs on eight hits in only one inning.
The Trojans' rally in the first started with one out when second baseman Anthony Lunetta walked after working Cunningham from a 0-2 count. Third baseman Alberto Concepcion singled to left before Metropoulos belted his sixth homer of the season to center. Metropoulos went 3-for-5 with the home run and three RBI.
First baseman Bill Peavey knocked a double to right and advanced to third on an RBI single by right fielder David Gordon, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Left fielder Michael Morales hit a two-run triple to right center while shortstop Michael Moon hit an RBI single to complete the scoring in the first.
In the second, a walk to Concepcion and back-to-back singles by Metropoulos and Peavey knocked out Cunningham. Gordon hit an RBI single off reliever Mark Jecmen, followed by a single by Morales. Jecmen was called for a balk, advancing the runners, and Gordon scored on a Jecmen wild pitch for an 11-0 lead.
The Cardinal battled back, utilizing a season-high five home runs in the game. Stanford hit two of them in the second on a solo shot by Jason Cooper and two-run blast to left by Brian Hall. Carlos Quentin hit his sixth of the season with a three-run shot in the fifth, but Chico got Cooper out on a long fly ball to right with the Trojans still leading, 11-7, at that point.
In the top of the sixth, Lunetta and Concepcion walked followed by a Metropoulos single to load the bases. Peavey hit a sacrifice fly to center followed by a two-run double by Gordon, pushing the Trojans' lead back to a 14-7 margin.
Cooper added his second homer of the game and ninth of the season with a three-run blast to right center in the ninth, but reliever Cory Campos got shortstop Andy Topham to fly out to right and struck out freshman first baseman Donny Lucy to end the game. Lucy struck out four times for the Cardinal.
