No. 4 Cal Women's Crew Upset by No. 4 Stanford at Big Row
April 13, 2002
The No. 4 Cal women's varsity eight was upset by No. 7 Stanford in dual racing at the Redwood Shores Lagoon, April 13. The win was Stanford's first in the Big Row since 1996.
'We got beaten by the faster crew today and I told the team that we are now at a defining point in the season,' said coach Dave O'Neill. 'I'm confident that the varsity can bounce back from this setback and I look forward to the weeks ahead.'
In the varsity race, Cal found itself down two seats as the crews crossed the 500 meter mark. The Bears tried to respond in the second 500 but were stymied by the Cardinal. Stanford put together a strong second 1000 gaining three of its four second margin of victory in the second half of the race.
Cal's depth was evident in the JV event where it handed the Stanford JV a 12 second loss. In the women's novice event Cal set the pace defeating Stanford by two boat lengths. In the varsity fours competitions, Cal took the victory in the 'A' event and Stanford earned top honors in the 'B' event.
