Quotes from Dennis Erickson after Saturday's Scrimmage
April 13, 2002
Corvallis, Ore. - What are your overall impressions of the first scrimmage?
'Defensively we are playing pretty well, and we have now for two weeks. I would be totally disappointed if we weren't dominant on defense at this time. There is no question we have a good defensive football team. We have a lot of veterans back from last season, and those veterans are making plays for us. We need to be dominant on defense, which we were today. Offensively I saw a lot of pretty darn good improvement, but we have a long way to go. Derek (Anderson) is playing extremely well, he is doing a lot of good things. We need to be more consistent catching the football, we dropped some balls today -- that is very disappointing to me. I like where this team is at right now, especially on defense, and we'll continue to get better the next two weeks on offense.'
What are you thoughts regarding the defensive secondary?
'I think we're pretty set at the corners, well actually Aric Williams is in the mix as well. We do have some good competition at the safety position with Lawrence Turner and Brandon Catenese both playing very well.'
How has the running game progressed?
'It was better today than it was last Wednesday, but again that area has a long way to go. We are running against a pretty good defense, but we have to get better there is no question about it.'
Did you try to put some pressure on the kickers at the end?
'I tried to - (Ryan) Cesca made the one at the end. If he would have missed that field goal the entire team would have had to run, and that is just about as bad as missing like he did last year at USC. The team didn't have to run, so that is a heck of a deal.'
Were there any reserves who really stepped up today?
'I'm going to have to look at the video, it's really hard to say right now. We've got some guys who are playing really well as backups, especially guys on the second group on defense.'
Do you think the quarterback position has become clear?
'It's really clear right now. Derek gets better and better the more he plays, you can see he is getting more comfortable all the time. Physically he has a lot of tools, and he is doing a real good job right now. He makes me a pretty good coach.'
