April 13, 2002
LOS ANGELES -- After earning the doubles point with two upsets in three matches, the No. 29 Washington State women's tennis team dropped five of six singles matches in a 5-2 loss to No. 12 USC.
Senior Erica Perkins and sophomore Stacy McKenna, the No. 15 doubles team in the country, recorded a 8-2 win over No. 4 Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson. The victory, coupled with 8-4 upset of No. 19 Anita Loyola and Luana Magnani by Cougar sophomore Lorena Arias and freshman Chris Martinez earned WSU the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the match.
'We played excellent doubles,' WSU Head Coach Cari Groce said. 'Pulling off two upsets of nationally ranked doubles teams was huge.'
In singles, the Trojans took five of six matches to capture a 5-2 victory. The lone win for the Cougars came at No. 5 where Nora Gaal defeated Melissa Esmero, 6-3, 6-2. The win was the fourth in the last five matches for the Cougar freshman.
'Nora maintained steady play and is really doing well for us down in the order,' Groce added.
WSU closes out its home season with a 2 p.m. match, Tuesday April 16 against border rival Idaho.
