No. 14 Softball Blanked By No. 6 Arizona State, 6-0
April 14, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 14 ranked Oregon State softball team was shutout by No. 6 Arizona State, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.
The loss drops the Beavers to 32-13 overall and 5-3 in the Pac-10 while ASU improves to 35-10 and 5-3 in conference action.
The Sun Devils opened the game strong, picking up a run in the first inning after an OSU error. Missy Hixon opened the game with a single and was sacrificed to second by Kristen Farber but the Beavers attempted to get the lead runner and the throw was wide - keeping both runners on base. Phelan Wright's two-out single up the middle plated Farber to give ASU the lead.
Arizona State added four more runs in the second inning, helped in part by a three-run home run to left field by Kara Brun. Oregon State's Crystal Draper started on the mound for the Beavers but was replaced in the second inning by Kristen Hunter. Draper was responsible for two of the runs in the inning while Hunter had a pair charged to her after the home run.
The Sun Devils continued their potent offense with four more hits in the seventh inning off Beaver hurler Monica Hoffman. Kirsten Voak's single to left field drove in the game's final run.
Throughout the day Oregon State was unable to get things going from the plate. Clare Burnum led the squad with a 2-for-3 effort and belted her team-best 14th double of the season.
'We didn't come to play and they did,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'That was the difference in the intensity and the execution.'
The Beavers hit the road for eight-straight games starting on Friday at No. 2 UCLA. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
