April 14, 2002
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The No. 54-ranked University of Oregon women's tennis team won its fifth straight match Sunday, dropping No. 56-ranked Tulane 4-3 at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Oregon, which has won three matches in a row over ranked opponents, improved to 12-9 on the season. Tulane fell to 11-11 on the year.
The Ducks lost the doubles point and at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, but bounced back to win the final four matches at Nos. 3-6 singles, all in straight sets.
'It was a quick turnaround,' said Oregon coach Jack Griffin, whose team competed this morning after playing against LSU yesterday afternoon. 'We were really solid at the bottom of our singles lineup. We were extremely pleased with our level of play.'
Senior Janice Nyland led the charge with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Ana Saaibi at the No. 3 slot. Then senior Vickie Gunnarsson and sophomores Davina Mendiburu and Courtney Nagle cruised through their matches to secure the Oregon victory.
Mendiburu and Nagle teamed up at No. 1 doubles to beat Joyce Bergman and Maiko Cook, 8-6, but the Ducks couldn't hang on at the other two doubles positions.
The Ducks conclude their regular season by playing host to Washington on Saturday at noon and Washington State on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be at the 15th Street Varsity Courts. In case of inclement weather, the matches will be moved indoors to the Student Tennis Center next to McArthur Court.
