No. 17 California Destroys No. 5 Pepperdine
April 15, 2002
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California men's tennis team rebounded from a tough loss to No. 38 Arizona State by throttling one of the top teams in the nation Monday at Berkeley's Hellman Tennis Center. The Bears (16-6) systematically destroyed the visiting Pepperdine Waves (18-5), 6-1, only allowing them to win three sets the entire afternoon.
Cal head coach Peter Wright mixed up the struggling doubles tandems today, combining junior Ben Miles and freshman Conor Niland on the second court, while 2001 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Balazs Veress moved to the third spot to join freshman Patrick Briaud. Veress and Briaud, who was playing in only the second doubles match of his short career at Cal, looked like they had been playing together all season long by winning their first five games, as they sent Pepperdine's duo of Calle Hansen and Brian Wright packing, 8-5. Cal's top doubles tandem of John Paul Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk, ranked No. 37, continued their re-emergence, dropping the 11th-ranked Wave duo of Sebastien Graeff and Stefan Suter.
With the Bears having locked up the doubles point, the Waves never got close in singles. Fruttero, Cal's team captain, ran the ITA's No. 1 player in Garland ragged on court number one, dispatching the top-ranked competitor in a tough first set before sweeping him in the second set, 7-5, 6-0. Veress, ranked 83rd, ended the day with an upset of his own, dropping Stefan Suter in a pair of tiebreak 7-6 sets. Miles improved his record to 6-0 on the sixth court, with an impressive 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 win over Graeff.
The Bears finish off their regular season this weekend in Berkeley, challenging USC on Friday and UCLA on Saturday in a pair of Pac-10 matches.
