Bruins Defeat UC Riverside, 4-2, To Give Head Coach Gary Adams 1100th Career Win

RIVERSIDE - Ben Francisco's sacrifice fly capped a two run fourthinning rally that proved the difference in the Bruins 4-2 victory over theHighlanders at the Riverside Sports Complex on Tuesday. The victory also marked the 1100th career win for Bruin Head Coach Gary Adams. In his 28th season at UCLA, and 33rd as a head coach, Adams has a career record of 1100-817-12. Earlier in the year, he won his 900th game at UCLA, and improved his UCLA record to 912-748-7 win the win on Tuesday.

The Bruins (16-22) got on the board in the first as Fransico doubled withone out, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Josh Arhart fora 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders (22-17) tied the score as in the third as Brian Wahlbrinksingled, stole second and scored on a two out RBI single by Big West Playerof the Week Adam Seuss. The Bruins regained the lead in the two run fourthinning ralley. Billy Susdorf doubled and scored on a single by Ryan McCarthyto put UCLA back in the lead 2-1. Francisco added a sacrifice fly as UCRtallied two runs in the fourth. Francisco finished the evening 3-for-4 witha run and a RBI

The Bruins added a run in the fifth, as McCarthy added a RBI double for a4-1 lead.

Timothy Faulkner singled and scored on another two out Seuss RBI single inthe seventh to pull to 4-2. The Highlanders left the bases loaded in theeighth and left 12 runners on base on the evening.

Matt Thiessen (5-1) pitched eight strong innings allowing four runs on eighthits and striking out six in taking the loss.

Nick Lyon (1-0) earned the win in relief. Mike Castillo, the seventh Bruinpitcher of the game, recorded the final out to earn his first save of theyear.

The Highlanders will travel to Arizona for a non-conference weekend battlewith the Wildcats. First pitch will be at 7 PM, Friday April 19.UCLA vs UC Riverside
