Matt Gentry Named Pac-10 Wrestling Newcomer of the Year

Walnut Creek, Calif. - The Pac-10 announced its 2001-02 wrestling awards today, with Cardinal freshman Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) earning Newcomer of the Year. Arizona State's Eric Larkin was named Wrestler of the Year and former Boise State head coach Mike Young earned the Coach of the Year nod, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Gentry, a 149-pound redshirt freshman was picked as Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year. He led the Cardinal attack as he posted a 35-11 record this season, becoming the first freshman in school history to tally 30 wins in a year. Overall, he led the team in wins (35, a single-season school record), pins (4) and team points (125.00). Gentry posted a 6-1 Pac-10 record before finishing second at the Pac-10 Championships and earning an NCAA berth. Gentry is the first Stanford wrestler to earn the Newcomer of the Year honor.
The Wrestler, Coach and Newcomer of the Year awards are determined by a coaches vote.
