Vanek Wins California/Nevada Heptathlon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California senior Missy Vanek ran away with the California/Nevada Heptathlon title Thursday at Hornet Stadium. Vanek, who earned All-America honors in the heptathlon in 2000 with a career-best 5614 points, posted an NCAA provisional qualifying total of 5,494 points today, just six points shy of the automatic mark. This was Vanek's first heptathlon since sitting out last season with a back injury.
Nevada's Tara Maves finished second with 5006 points, followed by her teammate, Maranda Brownson (4846).
Vanek finished the two-day event with three strong events. She posted 777 points for a career-best mark of 18-10.75w in the long jump. The Laclede, Idaho product then followed that event up with a throw of 134-1 in the javelin (684 points) and concluded the competition with an outstanding run of 2:16.64 in the 800m (870).
Cal senior Shawna Adkins placed fourth in the competition with 4818 points. Her best event was the 800m, where she posted 804 points with her time of 2:21.45.
The Golden Bears compete as a team at the Mount SAC Relays, April 19-21, and at the Woody Wilson Invitational, April 20.
