Barden Caps Beavers' Rally

April 19, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Brian Barden's two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning proved the difference as Oregon State beat UCLA 9-8 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (24-12 overall, 4-3 Pacific-10), trailing by four runs in the middle of the second inning, came back to make it 20 wins in their last 26 games before a crowd of 1,013.

OSU and UCLA (16-23, 2-5) resume their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude it Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Barden's homer to left-centerfield gave OSU a 9-7 lead. Jared Sanders then pitched the ninth inning and gave up a run but picked up his eighth save of the season, tying the Oregon State school record set by Mike Boire in 1997.

Ty Kline worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win, improving to 4-0 this season out of the bullpen. Andy Jarvis was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two runs batted in.

'We did everything we could do,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team improved to 15-4 at home this season and 6-2 in one-run games. 'Ty Kline did what he had to do, Jared Sanders did what he had to do, Brian Barden did what he had to do, Andy Jarvis got us going (homering for OSU's first run) ... big-time players make those big-time plays.'

The homer was Barden's eighth of the season, and it was what he was looking for when he went to the plate against UCLA reliever Mike Kunes with two out and Aaron Mathews at first base.

'Sometimes I just get a weird feeling (about hitting a homer), like last year against Washington State,' Barden said, referring to a game-ending grand slam. 'In my last at-bat, I'd just missed hitting one out when the ball went to the warning track. I felt comfortable at the plate and was hoping he'd throw one where I wanted it, and he did.'

The Bruin outfielders, playing almost on the warning track after Barden's previous drive, could only watch the ball sail toward the parking lot beyond left-centerfield. The rest was up to Sanders, as he capped a performance by the bullpen that pushed OSU's record to 21-2 in games that are tied or have the Beavers leading after six innings.

The OSU closer surrendered a one-out walk to Warren Trott, who then stole second, with two out, Chris Jensen's pinch-hit double drove home Trott to make it 9-8. Pinch-hitter Casey Grzecka then lofted a flyball into the right-centerfield gap, but centerfielder Mathews made a running catch to end the game and wrap up the series opener.

'Those make me sleep a lot better on Friday nights, and they let me eat some dinner,' Casey said.

The Beavers rallied after starter Ben Rowe struggled, allowing four runs in 1 1/3 inning of work. But Jarvis' shot into the ROTC obstacle course beyond rightfield to lead off the bottom of the second started a four-run inning for the Beavers, with two out, OSU came up with a two-run single by Tom Creighton and a run-scoring double by Mathews to tie the score.

'This team doesn't get down,' Barden said. 'We're a bunch of fighters, and we'll keep going through the ninth inning.'

Jarvis' homer was his sixth of the season and the 22nd of his career, giving him sole possession of sixth place on the list of OSU's all-time career leaders.

After Mathews made a diving catch on the warning track in center to thwart a UCLA rally in the top of the third, the Beavers took the lead at 6-4 in the bottom of the inning. Paul Richie delivered a sacrifice fly, then Will Hudson's headfirst slide into first base gave him a run-scoring infield single.

UCLA knotted the score at 6-6 with a pair of fourth-inning runs, but Jarvis doubled home a run in the bottom of the inning to put OSU back in front 7-6. That's the way the score stayed until the Bruins' Ryan McCarthy squeezed home the tying run in the top of the seventh inning.
