No. 1 Arizona Edges No. 3 Softball 2-1

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 1 Arizona softball team edged the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal 2-1 tonight in a hard-fought conference game at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. Stanford is now 35-9 overall, 4-6 in the Pac-10 while the Wildcats improve to 41-5, 8-1 in league play.
The game remained scoreless until Stanford scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out on the scoreboard, senior Jessica Mendoza doubled to centerfield. First baseman Sarah Beeson would hit a single down the leftfield line to score Mendoza.
The Cardinal remained in control of the game until the top of the seven when Wildcat catcher MacKenzie Vandergeest hit a two-run homerun to left centerfield.
Stanford would try to rally in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on second with one out, but a doubleplay would end the rally.
Junior Tori Nyberg took the loss for the Cardinal (20-5), allowing only two hits over seven innings and one earned run. Nyberg posted eight strikeouts on the night as well. Arizona's Jennie Finch posted the win scattering three hits over seven innings with five strikeouts.
Mendoza, Beeson and Kira Ching each had one hit for the Cardinal with the lone RBI coming from Beeson.
Stanford is next in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. as the Cardinal take on No. 6 Arizona State in a conference matchup at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.
