No. 8 Cal Women's Crew Takes On No. 20 Oregon State And Kansas

THIS WEEK: Sat., Apr.20 Stanford Invitational vs Oregon State and Kansas Redwood Shores, CA 9:00 a.m.

CAL RACES AT STANFORD INVITATIONAL: The No. 8 Cal women's crew will cross the Bay to take on No. 20 Oregon State and unranked Kansas at the Stanford Invitational, April 20 at Redwood Shores. Racing vs. Oregon State is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. Competition wiht Kansas starts at 2:00 p.m.

CAL WOMEN'S CREW 2002: After its third-consecutive team invitation to the NCAA Championships Regatta, Cal women's crew is established as one of the premier programs in the country, and looks to challenge for the 2002 national title. Fourth-year head coach Dave O'Neill returns nearly his entire team from 2001, which placed sixth at NCAAs last May.
The youth which marked last season has developed into experience, as 18 of the 20 rowers who competed at the 2001 NCAA Championships return. These athletes are more skilled and seasoned, and O'Neill is proud and impressed with the development of the squad.

COMPETITION: The Beavers have not raced since the San Diego Crew Classic, April 6-7. In San Diego the Beavers varsity placed second behind USC in the Jessop Whittier Cup Petite Final (places 7-12), with a time of 6:49.62. The second varsity won its petite final and the novice eight finished third overall behind Washington State and Washington. Kansas is coming off a second-place finish behind Boston College in the 2002 Knect Cup in Camden, NJ. Jayhawks won the JV eight event and won the Varsity 4 race at the Villanova Invitational.

STANFORD DUAL RECAP: The Cal women's varsity eight was upset by Stanford in dual racing at the Redwood Shores Lagoon, April 13. The win was Stanford's first in the Big Row since 1996. In the varsity race, Cal found itself down two seats as the crews crossed the 500 meter mark. The Bears tried to respond in the second 500 but were stymied by the Cardinal. Stanford put together a strong second 1000 gaining three of its four second margin of victory in the second half of the race.

USRowing/CRCA Coaches Poll: USRowing, in conjunction with the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) will conduct weekly polls for Women's NCAA Division I Collegiate Varsity Eights throughout the season. In the most recent poll released April 17, Cal garnered was ranked No. 8.
