No. 9 Huskies Blank Softball, 6-0
April 19, 2002
SEATTLE - The ninth-ranked Washington softball team won its seventh straight game over Oregon, blanking the Ducks 6-0 Friday afternoon in Pac-10 Conference softball action at Husky Softball Stadium. With the victory, the Huskies moved to 35-13 and 4-5 in the Pac-10, while the Ducks remained winless in conference play (0-10), falling to 18-19 overall in 2002.
'We were not ready to play softball today and in this conference you have to be prepared,' Oregon head coach Brent Rincon said. 'We made some lack of intensity type of errors and good teams will take advantage of that.'
The Husky offense jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first when freshman Kristen Rivera blasted a two-run home run to left field to also score junior Jaime Clark. Rivera's 14th home run of the season was her fourth in the last three games and her 11th in the last 18 games.
After going down in order in the second, the UW added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Clark started the rally by drawing a one-out walk, before eventually advancing to third on a pair of stolen bases. After Oregon pitcher Lindsey Kontra got Rivera to go down swinging for the second out, Husky sophomore Amanda Oleson came through with an RBI single up the middle to score Clark.
Washington then tallied a pair of back-to-back RBI hits by freshman Kathy Fiske and sophomore Courtney Jeffries , capitalizing on two Duck defensive errors to advance the lead to 5-0.
Although the Huskies would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on a Clark RBI single, Rivera's blast would prove to be all the run support freshman starter Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) would need. Boek, who moved to 14-2 overall, allowed just three hits, while striking out eight before giving way to relief pitcher Leslie Scott in the top of the sixth.
The Oregon offense was unable to get anything going against the UW defense, as the Ducks had only three base runners reach second base, while going down in order four times.
The Huskies continue their home stand with two more games this weekend versus No. 14 Oregon State (April 20-21). Saturday's game with Beavers will be broadcast live by Fox Sports Net beginning at 1 p.m. PDT.
