Two Home Runs Help Bruins Defeat Oregon State, 7-0
April 19, 2002
LOS ANGELES - The UCLA softball team posted its fifth straight victory on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium, recording a 7-0 victory over Oregon State. UCLA now improves to 38-6 (6-3 Pac-10), while Oregon State falls to 32-13 (5-5 Pac-10). The Bruins capitalized on a one-hitter by sophomore Keira Goerl, adding two-run home runs by Tairia Mims and Stacey Nuveman to a three-run first inning.
The Bruins opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Natasha Watley led off the game with a double, and scored along with Amanda Freed on a two-RBI single by Stacey Nuveman. Nuveman would score later in the inning when Crissy Buck completed a bases-loaded 15-pitch at-bat by being hit by a Kristen Hunter pitch.
Tairia Mims posted a one-out two-run home run in the second inning, her seventh blast of the year, to give UCLA the 5-0 lead. Nuveman then posted a two-run, two-out shot of her own in the fourth, her 14th of the season. Nuveman has now hit 84 career home runs, leaving her one shy of the NCAA record held by Arizona's Leah Braatz and Laura Espinoza.
That was more than enough offense for the Bruins, as sophomore Keira Goerl pitched well, holding the Beavers without a baserunner prior to a third-inning walk. Shortstop Kelly Petersen recorded the only hit of the day for Oregon State.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday afternoon, taking on Oregon in a 2 pm game. The Bruins and Ducks will also take the diamond for a 1 pm first pitch on Sunday. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com with Lou Riggs and Ryan Nuveman calling the action.
