Arizona Track & Field Off to Impressive Start at Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field teams are competing at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays this weekend in Walnut, Calif. After Friday's events, the Wildcats had three Pac-10 qualifying performances, one NCAA provisional-qualifying time and one NCAA automatic-qualifying time. The meet will continue on Saturday, April 20 at 6 p.m. PT.
Tara Chaplin and Kim Bates represented the Wildcat women in the 10,000m. Chaplin finished 10th in her heat in an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 33:30.59. This was Chaplin's first time competing in the 10,000m this season. Bates was 12th in her heat in an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 35:07.94. She has already earned a faster provisional-qualifying time of 35:00.53 for the NCAA Championships.
The Wildcat men had two athletes in the 3,000m steeplechase and one in the 5,000m. Steve Smith finished 12th in the 3,000m steeplechase in a Pac-10-qualifying time of 9:01.1. His season's best time is 8:59.22. Mark Anderson wasn't far behind in 13th place with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 9:02.0. He, too, has a faster qualifying time of 8:58.06. In the 5,000m, Tom Prindiville finished ninth in 14:13.44. This time earned him a spot in the Pac-10 Championships.
The Wildcats will continue competition at the Mt. SAC Relays today at 6 p.m. PT.
