Copeland's Effort Goes For Naught

April 20, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Stephen Copeland turned in Oregon State's longest pitching start of the season Saturday afternoon but it went for naught as the Beavers fell to UCLA 6-1 in Pacific-10 baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (24-13 overall, 4-4 Pacific-10) was within a run until the Bruins (17-24, 3-5) scored four times with two out in the top of the eighth inning.

The teams decide their series Sunday at 1 p.m., OSU took Friday's opening game 9-8. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Most of Saturday's game in front of a crowd of 1,189 was a pitching duel between Copeland and UCLA righthander Wes Whisler. Copeland went 7 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and a pair of walks, two of those runs scored after Copeland left the game with two out and two on in the eighth.

'Stephen Copeland did exactly what we needed him to do,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'He pitched very well, we needed him to get us into the eighth inning, and he did. We just didn't take care of our part offensively.'

While Copeland was giving OSU's bullpen a rest one day after it worked 7 2/3 innings in the Beavers' Friday win, Whisler was pitching a four-hitter for his first complete game. The freshman walked two and struck out seven to end OSU's five-game winning streak, improving his record to 4-1 this season.

The Beavers lost for just the seventh time in their past 27 games, and only the fifth time in 20 home games this season. A day after the Bruins had six doubles among their 14 hits, they didn't manage an extra-base hit but outhit the Beavers 12-4.

UCLA scratched out a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on three groundball singles, then added a run in the top of the third inning on two outs. Oregon State got within 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Andy Jarvis drove his seventh homer of the season - and his second in two days - over the rightfield fence with one out, one hitter later, Will Hudson nearly evened the game but his flyball to right was caught at the base of the fence.

The Bruins broke the game open in the eighth. With a runner at second and two out, Copeland intentionally walked Adam Berry and lefthander Jake Postlewait was brought in to face lefthanded-hitting Chris Jensen.

But pinch-hitter Casey Grzecka, batting from the right side, pushed a run-scoring single down the rightfield line to make it 3-1. Brandon Averill then grounded a single through the left side to drive in another run and Warren Trott singled to right for a 5-1 lead. Righthander Joshua Garcia replaced Postlewait, and UCLA's Ryan McCarthy added another single to right that drove in the final run to make it 6-1 before Garcia got a groundball to end the inning.

Jarvis was 2-for-3 on the day for Oregon State. Tom Creighton extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a bunt single in the bottom of the eighth inning, and OSU's only other hit was a single up the middle by Aaron Mathews in the first inning that pushed his hitting streak to 10 games.

For UCLA, Averill was 3-for-4, Trott was 2-for-4 and Ryan Rasmussen was 2-for-5.
