April 20, 2002
SEATTLE, Wa. - The No. 34 Washington men's tennis team defeated Oregon for the second time this season, Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-2 at the Quillian Stadium. UW improves to 17-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play, while the Ducks are now 12-10 and 0-7 in the Pac-10.
The Huskies started off the afternoon a little slow, losing the doubles point for the third match in a row. However, No. 3 doubles tandem Christoph Palmanshofer (St. Georgen, Austria) and Peter Scharler (Salzburg, Austria) earned their second win on the year, defeating Manuel Kost and Chris King, 8-3.
The doubles point was clinched in the top position as Oded Tieg and Sven Swinnen teamed up to defeat Ari Strasberg (Ramat-Hasaron, Israel) and Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia), 8-6, while Matt Hanlin (Birmingham, England) and Dillon Ruby (Westlake Village, Calif.) were also defeated 8-5 by Oregon duo Martin Pawlowski and Jason Menke.
Singles action was competitive as four of the six matches went into a third set. No. 57 Hanlin clinched the match for UW with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 defeat over Tieg on the top court. Hanlin finishes the regular season with a record of 19-5. Strasberg, the last Husky to finish, defeated Pawlowski in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 to earn his ninth win this season.
Palmanshofer, playing No. 4 singles, lost a close second set, but came back to defeat Swinnen, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to notch his 11th win on the year. Freshman Scharler took Oregon's Menke in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 to finish the regular season with a record of 18-8. Ruby claimed his 16th win with a 6-4, 6-1 win over King in the sixth spot.
UW's Vlaski, ranked 28th nationally and who has been hot as of late, winning four consecutive matches up to today, could not hold on as Kost defeated the Husky in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Next up, Washington will head to Ojai, Calif. for the Pac-10 Championships, April 25-28. This individual tournament comes two weeks prior to NCAA Regionals, which will take place May 11-12.
