No. 14 Softball Drops Game With No. 9 Washington, 3-1
April 20, 2002
SEATTLE, Wash. - The No. 9 ranked University of Washington softball team continued its dominance of No. 14 Oregon State in Seattle, with a 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers (32-15, 5-6 Pac-10), have topped the Huskies (36-13, 5-5 Pac-10) just one time in the Emerald City during program history.
The low-scoring game was a pitchers' dual from the start as Washington's Tia Bollinger allowed just two OSU hits over the first four innings. Oregon State's Crystal Draper kept the Huskies guessing and worked her way out of a second inning jam with a key strikeout.
The Huskies broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three consecutive singles. Kathy Fiske's one-out single to left field started the action for UW. Courtney Jeffries roped a single through the left side to put a pair of runners on base and outfielder Megan Owen followed with an RBI single to left, giving the Huskies the lead.
The Beavers looked to get things going in the fifth inning as Jessica King led off the frame with a single through the left side, but Oregon State could not capitalize.
Kristen Hunter entered the game to pitch for OSU in the bottom of the fifth and was hit hard as the Huskies added two more runs in the frame. UW shortstop Jaime Clark led off the inning with a double down the left field line and then Kristen Rivera followed with her fifth home run in four games, a long shot over the left-center field wall.
Oregon State made things interesting in the seventh as King belted a one-out double off the right field wall and advanced to third as Fiske booted a grounder by Jenni Jodoin. King scored on a fielders choice as Kelly Petersen reached first but Jodoin was forced out at second base. Clare Burnum kept the inning alive with a single to center but the game ended when Petersen collided with Clark at shortstop on a single by Michelle Chariton.
Bollinger (16-7) finished with seven strikeouts on the afternoon for the Huskies while Draper (10-4) had four K's in four innings of work for OSU.
The Beavers and Huskies complete the weekend series at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
