Peavey Is Perfect In Baseball's 13-7 Win At Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. - Bill Peavey went 5-for-5 with three doubles Friday and the USC Trojans defeated the Washington State Cougars, 13-7, in Pac-10 Conference action at Bailey-Brayton Field. It was Peavey's first career five-hit game and he pushed his season-high hitting streak to 12 games, hitting .511 during that span.
USC improves to 22-16 overall and 7-3 in Pac-10 play while Washington State fell to 14-21 overall and 2-8 in the Pac-10. The Trojans received help in the conference standings as both Arizona State and Stanford lost on Friday.
The Trojans got on the scoreboard with three runs in the first, all with two outs. Joey Metropoulos walked followed by the first of Peavey's doubles. Alberto Concepcion hit a two-run single to center followed by an RBI single by right fielder David Gordon.
Concepcion went 4-for-6 on the night with a triple and four RBI while Gordon went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
Michael Moon hit a two-run homer to right in the fifth, his second of the season to give USC an 8-3 lead. Concepcion hit a fly ball triple later in the inning to score Peavey for a six-run Trojans' lead.
Trojan reliever Cory Campos entered the game in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out. After allowing a two-run single by Justin Hart (both runs were charged to Brett Bannister), Campos did not allow a run in 3 2/3 innings to register his second save of the season. Campos allowed only four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Trojans will continue their series with the Cougars tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday, also at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
