Quotes from Head Coach Dennis Erickson after Saturday's Scrimmage

April 20, 2002

Corvallis, Ore. - The following comments are from Football Head Coach Dennis Erickson after the April 20 scrimmage at Reser Stadium.

On the kicking game ...

'There is definitely some competition there. We were just trying to put some pressure on our kickers at the end of the scrimmage to find out where we are. The competition will continue throughout next week and into training camp this fall as well - hopefully somebody will emerge. The battle is real close right now, we just don't have anybody who is real consistent, and that is a concern.'

On the offense ...

'The offense looked better today than it has all spring. Sometimes the scoring is not as important as what you did to get there for an opportunity. We made some strides protecting the quarterback and blocking up front. Derek (Anderson) had an outstanding day at quarterback, the receivers did a good job of catching the ball, and Steven Jackson had some room to run for a change. I'm happy where the offense is right now, the unit made big improvement over the last week.'

On the defense ...

'Defensively, we have had a great spring, that is the strength of this team. We have many starters coming back, and as I have said before, I thought our defense was as good as any in the Conference at the end of last season. If we continue to improve, I think we'll have one of the better defenses in the league.'

The play on Derek Anderson ...

'Derek is just an intelligent person. He is what I like to call a gym rat, he always likes to be around the game. He studies a lot of video, so he has a lot of athletic sense -- he understands what is going on around him. Playing him last year has made a huge difference in his development.'

On the status of Shayne House ...

'Shayne reinjured his shoulder, I don't think the shoulder has ever been healthy. We're going to get a second opinion to see where he is as far as his health and his football career. I really feel bad for him, he's gone through a lot to try to make his shoulder healthy.'

Who would be your starting receivers right now?

'I would start Shawn Kintner and James Newson if we had to play tomorrow, and it would be a toss up between Kenny Farley and Cole Clasen.'
