April 20, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Wes Whisler pitched a one-run complete game and the Bruins scored four runs in the top of the eighth to even up the series with Oregon State with a 6-1 win in Corvallis, Oregon. Whisler has allowed just four runs in three Pac-10 starts, and is a perfect 3-0 in conference play. The Bruins improve to 17-24, 3-5 in conference play, while OSU drops to 24-13, 4-4 in the Pac-10.
Whisler was dominating in his third conference start. The freshman lefty struck out seven and allowed just four hits and two walks. He also hit two batters.
For the second straight day, the Bruins got on the board first. With one out in the second inning, Chris Jensen hit a single to left field. He advanced to third on a perfectly executed hit and run play with Brandon Averill. Jensen scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by Warren Trott.
Ryan Rasmussen led off the third inning with a single to right field. He stole second base, and advanced to third on Ben Francisco's ground out. The senior second baseman scored on Josh Arhart's RBI groundout to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead.
Andy Jarvis hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth. It was a solo shot over the right field wall to cut the Beaver lead to 2-1.
The Bruins took command in the eighth. Rasmussen led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Thayer. After the Beavers intentionally walked Adam Berry, Casey Grzecka pinch hit and lined a single into right field, scoring Rasmussen. Averill followed with an RBI single, and Warren Trott sent home the fifth Bruin run of the game on an RBI line drive to right field. After the Beavers changed pitchers, Ryan McCarthy lined a single to right field, sending pinch runner Nick Lyon home to give the Bruins a 6-1 lead.
Whisler walked a batter and hit Jarvis with a pitch to put runners at first and second with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but struck Ian McMullen to preserve the Bruin victory and pick up his first complete game.
Averill led the Bruins with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Warren Trott, filling in for an injured Casey Janssen at first base, took advantage of the opportunity, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Rasmussen also had two hits and scored two runs.
The Bruins look to win their first Pac-10 series on Sunday when they face the Beavers at 1:00 p.m. The Bruin starter is up in the air with the injury to Janssen on Friday, but the Beavers will throw lefty Mark McLemore.
