Women's Tennis Wins Sixth Straight, Drops No. 19-Ranked Washington 4-3

April 20, 2002

EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Janice Nyland's match-clinching win at No. 3 singles gave the University of Oregon women's tennis team its sixth straight victory, this time a 4-3 decision Saturday over No. 19 Washington on the 15th Street Courts.

Oregon, ranked No. 44 in the nation heading into the match, won for only the second time against the Huskies in program history and the first time since 1999.

'Our kids wanted this so bad,' sixth-year Oregon coach Jack Griffin said. 'We were playing so well from the top to the bottom of our lineup. I would've been happy regardless of the outcome because we competed so well.'

Nyland split the first two sets against Dea Sumantri 7-5, 1-6, then won the see-saw third set 7-6, securing the victory in a 7-2 tiebreaker.

'I couldn't ask for a better situation for a 3-3 match to come down to Janice,' Griffin said. 'She just wasn't going to lose that match.'

In impressive fashion, Oregon's No. 1 singles player, Daria Panova, smoked No. 55-ranked Claire Carter 6-1, 6-1, in a match that lasted just 35 minutes.

'That shows what level she can play at,' Griffin said. 'When she gets a few more months on these hardcourts (Panova played on clay in her native Moscow, Russia), she could win a national championship.'

The Ducks also received victories from two sophomores -- Davina Mendiburu at No. 4 and Courtney Nagle at No. 5 singles. Washington claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3, as the Ducks' Monika Gieczys and Panova won 8-4 at No. 2.

Four of the Ducks' last six wins have been against ranked opponents and Washington was the highest-ranked team they've beaten this season. Oregon lost 7-0 on Feb. 23 to Washington at Seattle.

Oregon next plays host to No. 30 Washington State on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the 15th Street Courts.
