April 20, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State could not get on-track against USC starter Matt Chico and dropped a 15-3 decision in Pacific-10 Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Cougar starter Brandon Hundt (4-4) received the loss. The junior right-hander threw two innings, allowing eight hits and eight runs. Chico (6-3) went six innings, surrendering two hits and no runs.
WSU (14-22 overall, 2-9 in the Pac-10) managed to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to avoid a shutout. USC (23-16, 8-4) had 19 hits and remained in first place in the Pac-10 with the win.
Seven different players recorded one hit for the Cougars, led by Jamin Svendsen's RBI single that scored two runs. Bill Peavey led USC by going 3-for-3, hitting two home runs - a grand slam in the top of the first and a solo shot in the ninth - and collecting six RBI. Peavey is 8-for-8 in the series.
The Cougars got all three of their runs with a rally in the final frame. WSU had five of its seven hits in the ninth. With men on first and second, Brent Robertson sliced a single to center field to score Tyson Boston. Svendsen then singled to right center field to plate Robertson and Brandon Reddinger.
