Beavers See Finale Slip Away

April 21, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Aaron Mathews extended his hitting streak to 11 games but Oregon State lost to UCLA 9-7 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (24-14 overall, 4-5 Pacific-10) had built a three-run lead heading into the final two innings before UCLA (18-23, 4-5) rallied for the win before a crowd of 1,136.

OSU now goes to Portland for a non-league game Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Beavers return home next weekend against second-ranked Stanford, with the first night game in the 96-year history of Goss Stadium at Coleman Field set for Friday at 6 p.m. and the series continuing Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Beavers will be looking to rebound from a disappointing end to a series against UCLA.

'This was a tough one,' OSU first baseman Andy Jarvis said. 'We felt like we were the better team and we got a lead, and maybe we got complacent but they came back with a lot of fire.'

OSU led 6-3 going into the eighth inning, but the Bruins came up with four runs in the top of the eighth on just two hits, taking advantage of two walks and a pair of hit batters to go in front 7-6. UCLA then added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth when a wild pitch and an error plated two Bruins to make it 9-6.

Oregon State brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, as Aaron Mathews and Chris Biles singled to start the inning. They advanced on Brian Barden's high chopper back to the mound, and Jarvis brought OSU within 9-7 with a sacrifice fly, Seth Pietsch then lined a ball into centerfield but right at Bruin oufielder Rashad Parker to end the game.

Mathews, who had earlier singled home a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, was 2-for-4 as the freshman centerfielder ran his hitting streak to 11 games. Tom Creighton's streak ended at 15 games, making it the second-longest of the year for the Beavers behind Biles' 16-gamer.

Paul Richie was also 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for OSU while Wick Udy was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Biles was 2-for-5. The Beavers' defense helped preserve a lead into the late innings by throwing three Bruins out at the plate and nailing two more at third base.

OSU had taken a 3-2 lead on Richie's two-run double down the leftfield line in the bottom of the second inning, then increased that to 4-2 on Udy's run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth. After the Bruins picked up a run in the top of the seventh, Oregon State got Mathews' run-scoring single and a bases-loaded walk by Jarvis to bump the score to 6-3.

The defeat marked just the third time this season OSU has lost back-to-back games.

'We haven't lost two games in a row many times, and this one's tough,' Jarvis said. 'Our pitching staff is a lot better than it showed today, and they'll be back. And all weekend, it seemed like we could never really get a sustained rally going. We had a few hits here and there, but we never got that big inning we're accustomed to getting.'

Jared Sanders, who matched the school record for saves in a season by picking up his eighth on Friday, took the loss for the Beavers to fall to 1-3. The late Bruin rally overcame a good effort by OSU starter Mark McLemore, who matched his career-high by going six-plus innings, he allowed three runs on five hits and four walks, striking out five.

For UCLA, Kevin Jerkens got the win with 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on a pair of hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Josh Arhart was 4-for-5 with three doubles for UCLA and Ryan Rasmussen drove in three runs for the Bruins.
