Big Inning Boosts USC Past Cougars 15-9

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State could not overcome an eight-run sixth inning by visiting USC and took a 15-9 loss in Pacific-10 Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Marshall Hendon (0-2) took the loss for the Cougars. Hendon did not record an out after coming in to relieve starter Bryce Chamberlin in the sixth inning. He allowed two hits and three runs during his outing. Jon Williams (5-2) notched the win for USC, while Cory Campos received his third save of the season, his second this series.
WSU (14-23 overall, 2-10 in the Pac-10) pounded out 14 hits. Evan Hecker, Robert Stahlke, Derek Bruce, Steve Mortimer and Brandon Reddinger had two hits apiece. Mortimer and We Falkenborg also recorded two RBI each. USC (24-16, 9-3) was led by Michael Moon's four-hit, four-RBI day. The Trojans also posted 14 hits.
The Trojans scored first, putting up two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Cougars responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Falkenborg scored on a wild pitch. Mortimer followed with an RBI double to right field, plating Henderson and Stahlke for a 3-2 WSU lead.
USC tied the game at three in the top of the fifth, but the Cougars bounced back with four runs in their half of the inning. Jeff LaRue singled to center field to bring home Hecker. Falkenborg followed with a double to right center field that scored LaRue and Justin Hart. Henderson lined a single to left field to plate Falkenborg and give WSU a 7-3 lead.
USC, however, posted an eight-run sixth, scoring seven runs with two outs in the inning to rally and take an 11-7 lead. The Trojans had six hits in the inning and were led by Alberto Concepcion's three-run home run and Bill Peavey's solo shot.
The Cougars answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the Trojan advantage to 11-9. Stahlke tripled to right field and Bruce followed with an RBI double, then came home on a Reddinger single.
The Trojans extended its lead by scoring one run in the eighth and three in the ninth to take a 15-9 lead. Campos shutout the Cougar bats the final 2 2/3 innings, striking out four of the nine batters he faced to pick up the save.
The Cougars now head south Tuesday for a single contest with Lewis-Clark State. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Harris Field in Lewiston.
