Huskies Walker, Inman Rout Impressive Fields at Mt. SAC Relays
April 21, 2002
WALNUT, Calif. - Husky juniors Brad Walker and Courtney Inman each posted impressive victories late Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., one of the nation's premier outdoor track and field events.
Walker, an indoor All-American pole vaulter last season, equaled the sixth-best vault in school history with a mark of 17-8 1/2, exactly four inches better than second-place finisher C.J. Bell of UCLA. Walker's vault matches his NCAA provisional-qualifying mark set two weeks ago at Stanford, and places the Spokane, Wash. native in a tie for fifth in the nation in 2002.
Also on the victory stand at Mt. SAC was Inman, who placed ahead of nearly 60 of the nation's top 1500-meter competitors with a 4-minute, 20.58-second victory. Inman, who already boasts NCAA qualifying marks at both 800 meters and 1500 meters, improved to fourth in the national rankings, and established the fourth-fastest 1500-meter time ever by a Husky woman.
In the women's pole vault, freshman Kate Soma renewed a rivalry with Stanford's Kathleen Donaghue, with whom the Portland, Ore., native is tied for 11th in the national rankings this season. Soma continued her outstanding debut season with a vault of 12-5 1/2, but was outdone by the Cardinal junior's 12-11 1/2 vault and settled for second.
A pair of Huskies took to the track in the men's 1500-meter event as well, with junior Jeremy Park and sophomore sensation Eric Garner each posting times better than the Pac-10 standard in the event. Garner, who entered the weekend ranked ninth nationally with a best mark of 3:43.56, placed 10th in his heat in 3:45.16, while Park notched an 11th-place finish in 3:48.77.
Next up for the Huskies is the second in a set of split-squad weekends, with several athletes traveling to the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, while the rest battle the host Oregon Ducks at the Pepsi Invitational in Eugene.
