No. 14 Softball Shutout By No. 9 Washington, 1-0
April 21, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Monica Hoffman allowed just three hits but the No. 9 ranked University of Washington softball team used an unearned run in the third inning to knock off No. 14 Oregon State, 1-0, in Sunday's Pac-10 action.
The Beavers (32-16, 5-7 Pac-10), out-hit the Huskies (37-13, 6-5 Pac-10), 4-3 but were unable to get any runs across the plate.
With the game scoreless in the third inning, UW capitalized on a leadoff walk, error and hit batter to load the bases. Kristen Rivera's one-out slow roller to second base was able to score Steph Nicholson for the game's lone run.
Oregon State got a pair of runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings but was unable to take advantage. Jessica King, Kelly Petersen, Michelle Chariton and Brynnen Guthrie each singled for the Beavers.
Despite the third inning error on a chopped grounder, OSU shone defensively. In a somewhat comical moment, OSU third baseman Clare Burnum's glove was knocked off her hand while fielding a line drive by Courtney Jeffries. Burnum grabbed her glove off the ground with the ball still inside and threw Jeffries out at first to end the sixth inning.
UW reliever Tia Bollinger struck out the side in the seventh to close out the game and secure the Husky victory.
Hoffman finished with six K's for OSU.
Oregon State travels to Portland State University on Tuesday for a double-header with the Vikings. Game-one starts at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Action Sports Cable Network.
