No. 9 Softball Earns Weekend Sweep With 1-0 Shutout Of No. 14 Oregon State
April 21, 2002
SEATTLE - Three Husky pitchers combined for the shutout and freshman Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) drove in the game's only run, as No. 9 Washington defeated No. 14 Oregon State 1-0 Sunday in Pac-10 action at Husky Softball Stadium. With the win, the Huskies claimed their fifth straight, improving to 37-13 overall and 6-5 in conference play, while the Beavers fell to 32-16 overall and 5-7 in the Pac-10.
Washington, which was out hit 4-3, scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the third. UW freshman Steph Nicholson (Tucson, Ariz.) started the inning by drawing a walk. After senior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) flied out to right field for the first out, sophomore Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) reached base on a fielding error by OSU third baseman Clare Burnum to put runners at first and second.
After Beaver pitcher Monica Hoffman (11-7) hit UW junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) with a pitch to load the bases, Rivera came through with a slow ground ball to the right side, allowing Nicholson to come home from third base.
Oregon State had a runner in scoring position in the second, fourth and fifth innings. The Beavers best chance ended up being in the second when designated player Shelly Prochaska walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice and went to third following a ground out by Kelly Peterson. UW starting pitcher Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.), however, got leftfielder Alana Mendoza to foul out to third base for the final out.
Boek, who moved to 15-2 in 2002, pitched the first four innings before giving way to classmate Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.). Scott gave up a hit in the fifth and then was replaced by sophomore Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) for the sixth and the seventh innings.
Bollinger also allowed one hit in the sixth, but struck out the side in the seventh to earn her third save of the season.
Washington hits the road for four Pac-10 games next week, beginning with a Wednesday meeting with No. 2 UCLA in Los Angeles at 2 p.m. The Huskies then head north for a weekend series at Stanford (March 26) and California (March 27-28).
