Five Bruins Selected To U.S. World Cup Team

April 22, 2002

Five former UCLA All-Americans have been selected to the 2002 U.S. World Cup team, the most by any college. Among the 23 players who will represent the U.S. at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan are goalkeeper Brad Friedel, defender Frankie Hejduk, midfielders Cobi Jones and Eddie Lewis and forward Joe-Max Moore. In addition, defender Greg Vanney and forward Ante Razov were named as alternates.

Friedel, Jones and Moore will be making their third consecutive World Cup appearances. They previously participated in 1994 and 1998. Hejduk is a two-time selection, having been on the team in 1998, and Lewis is a first-time pick.

Friedel, an All-American at UCLA from 1991-92, currently plays for the Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League and was a member of the 1992 and 2000 Olympic squads. He is the second-most capped goalkeeper in U.S. National Team history and has posted a 7-3-3 lifetime record in World Cup qualifying play.

Jones, an All-American in 1991, is the all-time U.S. appearance leader and ranks third on the all-time list for points scored. The Los Angeles Galaxy star is one of only two U.S. players to have played every minute of the World Cup in both 1994 and 1998.

Moore, an All-American in 1991 and 1992, ranks second on the all-time U.S. list with 24 international goals. Like Friedel, Moore plays in the English Premier League with Everton.

Hejduk, an All-American in 1994, plays for Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga. He is a two-time Olympian (2000, 1996) and started two of the USA's three games at the 1988 World Cup.

Lewis, a Soccer News All-American in 1994 and 1995, has scored three goals in 38 career caps for the U.S. Lewis plays for Fulham FC in the English Premier League.

The World Cup will kick off on May 31.
