Beavers Back On Winning Track

April 23, 2002

PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon State broke a two-game losing streak with an 11-4 win over Portland in non-league baseball Tuesday afternoon at Pilot Stadium. Aaron Mathews extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a 2-for-4 day and drove in three runs for the Beavers (25-14 overall, 4-5 Pacific-10).

OSU now gets set to host fourth-ranked Stanford in a three-game Pacific-10 series this weekend. Friday's 6 p.m. start will be the first night game in the 96-year history of Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, with the series continuing Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. All three of those games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Oregon State will return to Pac-10 play on a winning note after capturing the season series from its in-state rival, having beaten Portland (16-21, 9-9 West Coast) in three of four meetings this season.

'We just needed to get a win, and we did that,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team had suffered a late-inning loss to UCLA on Sunday.

The Beavers took control of Tuesday's game in the middle innings, using three walks and a pair of hits in the top of the fourth inning go to in front 3-0. The inning included run-scoring singles by J.R. Runyon and Mathews, with Mathews' hit boosting his streak to a dozen games.

'It was good for us to come up here and get it out of the way,' Mathews said. 'We were able to work on some things that we needed work on, and it was good for out team. Now we're looking forward to this weekend.'

Portland got back within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth and came within a few feet of tying the game. With two out and a runner at second, the Pilots' Brock Griffin grounded a single through the left side and Matt Hollod rounded third and headed for the plate, however, Beaver leftfielder Seth Pietsch's throw was perfect and catcher Wick Udy tagged Hollod out to preserve the lead.

OSU then bumped the lead to 4-2 on Udy's two-out, run-scoring single up the middle in the top of the fifth. The next inning, a Portland error allowed one run and then Brian Barden poked a two-run double down the rightfield line to make it 7-2.

Barden's double was the 35th of his career, tying him for fifth place on OSU's list of career leaders with Troy Schader (1997-99). His 143 career RBIs brought him within one of second place on the Beavers' career list, just behind Matt Bailie (144 from 1995-98).

Joshua Garcia, the second of five Beaver pitchers, earned the win to improve to 3-2 this season. Ben Rowe, Garcia, Don Stykel, Jake Postlewait and Jared Sanders combined on a seven-hitter, walking 3 and striking out seven.

OSU increased its lead to 10-2 in the seventh inning when Tom Creighton tripled home two runs with a bounding ball to right, then scored on Mathews' sacrifice fly. Mathews added a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth to close the scoring.

Chris Biles was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles for the Beavers, while Udy was 2-for-3 with a double and Hudson was 2-for-3.
