No. 14 Softball Sweeps Double-Header With Portland State, 5-0 and 2-0
April 23, 2002
PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior third baseman Clare Burnum blasted a pair of home runs and three Beaver pitchers combined to allow just four hits as No. 14 Oregon State swept Tuesday's double-header with Portland State, 5-0 and 2-0.
The Beavers (34-16, 5-7 Pac-10), jumped in front early in game-one, scoring a pair of un-earned runs in the first inning. On what appeared to be a routine third out of the inning, Portland State (17-26, 6-8 WAC) first baseman Nicole Ivie dropped a throw at the bag on a grounder from Shelly Prochaska and Burnum rounded the bases and scored from second. Prochaska proceeded to score the second run of the frame after Traci Feldt's grounder was misplayed by PSU hurler Morgan Seibert.
Oregon State starter Monica Hoffman (12-7) continued her dominance on the mound, allowing just one hit while striking out nine in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Kathryn Neufeld struck-out one batter in relief.
The Beavers' bats came alive in the sixth inning as OSU tallied three hits and built on its lead with three runs. Steph Adams' single through the left-side knocked in Alana Mendoza who led off the inning with a single. Burnum followed with a two-run home run over the right field wall, her first of the day and second long ball of the season, to put the Beavers in front 5-0.
Oregon State finished with seven hits in the contest, led by Brynnen Guthrie's 2-for-4 effort from the plate.
Crystal Draper (11-4) shutdown the Vikings in the second game, allowing just three hits en route to her third shutout of the season and sixth complete game.
'It was a great pitching performance all day,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Monica (Hoffman), Kathryn (Neufeld) and Crystal (Draper) all threw well. I loved our intensity - we played great.'
Burnum's third inning blast over the right field fence gave the Beavers an early lead. Burnum finished the game batting 2-for-3 with a walk.
'Clare hit the ball really well,' said Walker. Overall we hit the ball well and came up with some good battles at the plate.'
Senior Michelle Chariton led off the seventh inning with an infield single, her second hit of the game, and proceeded the steal second base. Chariton's swipe was the 31st of her career, moving her just one shy of matching the OSU school record.
Prochaska's single up the middle plated Chariton and gave the Beavers a 2-0 cushion, and Draper struckout the final two batters in the bottom half of the inning to secure the victory.
As a team, the Beavers had eight hits in the contest but left 10 runners stranded on base.
Oregon State returns to Pac-10 action on Friday when the Beavers visit Arizona State University. First-pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Tempe, AZ.
