Wildcats Remain In Lead at Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships
April 23, 2002
WALLA WALLA, Wash.-The University of Arizona remained in first place Tuesday after round two of the Pac-10 Women's Golf Conference Championships by totaling a team score of 16-over-par 304. Individually, sophomore Lorena Ochoa leads the way for Arizona in the 54-hole tournament as she stands tied for second place at 1-over-par 145.
At 21-over-par 597 for the tournament, Arizona holds a three-shot lead over second-place UCLA. Southern California is in third with a two-day total of 29-over-par 605. Yvonne Choe of UCLA owns the individual lead at 1-under-par 143 after 36 holes.
Midway through Tuesday's second round, Arizona had widened its lead to 17 strokes. But the two-time defending Pac-10 Champions were unable to keep the sizable lead on the back nine.
'We just got on the wrong side of the momentum,' said second-year head coach Greg Allen about the team's performance down the stretch. 'We played so well as a team for 13 holes. Then, the tides just turned and we let it slip away. We're disappointed that we didn't finish well, but we are still in position to win this thing tomorrow.'
Ochoa, who is seeking her 12th career victory and second consecutive conference championship, completed the second round with a score of 1-over-par 73. Tuesday marked just the first time in the spring season that she has shot over par. Ochoa last went over par on Nov. 10 in the second round of the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational, where she later rebounded and won the tournament with an impressive final-round performance. The sophomore from Guadalajara, Mexico, has won seven consecutive NCAA tournaments.
'Lorena certainly proved she's human today,' Allen said. 'Shooting 6-over-par on the final six holes will only maker hungrier to come out tomorrow and tackle this course again. She will bounce back from today's round.'
Laura Myerscough, a junior from Charleston, Ill., continued her consistent performance as she stands tied for fourth place, one shot behind Ochoa. Myerscough used her second straight round of 1-over-par 73 to place herself just three strokes behind the tournament's leader at 2-over 146. Senior Cristina Baena is tied for 13th at 9-over 153 after a second-round 80.
Arizona's pair of freshmen both stand at 15-over-par 159 after round two to join in a tie for 34th place. Miriam Kraschinski shot 6-over-par 78 Tuesday, while Mar Garcia carded a 12-over-par 84. Senior Cathie Williamson is competing as an individual and stands tied for 32nd at 14-over-par for the tournament.
Tournament action concludes Wednesday as final-round play will commence with 8 a.m. tee-times. Arizona will continue its run at a third-straight conference championship and its fifth in the last six years.
