Cardinal Wrap Up Stellar 2001-02 Season

Stanford, Calif. - The 2001-02 Stanford men's swimming and diving team wrapped up another banner season on The Farm. The Cardinal went a perfect 8-0 during the dual meet season, including a 4-0 mark in the always tough Pac-10.
With their second place finish at NCAAs, Stanford posted its 18th top-3 finish at the championships since 1982. The Cardinal had three individual champions crowned in Athens, Georgia in March. Sophomore Peter Marshall won the 100y backstroke, clocking in at 45.91. Fellow sophomore Markus Rogan took home two titles - the 200y individual medley (1:44.03) and the 200y backstroke (1:41.14).
In addition, Stanford won three relay titles at the national championships. On the opening day of competition, the Cardinal set an American record in the 200y freestyle relay with their scorching time of 1:16.49 (Randall Bal 19.52, Peter Marshall 18.74, Andrew Schnell 19.29, Bobby O'Bryan 18.94). The relay team of Bal, Michael Bruce, Matt McDonald and Marshall broke the Cardinal school record with their time of 1:25.47 in the 200y medley relay. Stanford also took top honors in the 400y medley relay in a school record time of 3:06.81 (Marshall, Bruce, Dan Westcott, Bal).
Several individual swimmers posted top-3 finishes for the Cardinal as well: Dan Trupin in the 200y individual medley (1:44.08), Randall Bal in the 50y freestyle (19.48), Peter Marshall in the 100y butterfly (46.48), Bal in the 100y backstroke (46.13), Marshall in the 200y backstroke (1:41.85) and the 400y freestyle relay team of Bal, Marshall, O'Bryan, Schnell (2:51.63). Sophomore Michael Bruce took second in the 200y breaststroke on his way to establishing a new school record in the event with his time of 1:54.81.
At the Pac-10 Conference Championships in Long Beach, California, Stanford claimed its 21st consecutive conference championship title. The Cardinal garnered seven individual titles as well as three relay titles.
Freshman Dan Trupin won the 200y IM in a school record time of 1:43.83 while teammate Markus Rogan took top honors in the 400y IM (3:42.76) - also posting a school record. Michael Bruce picked up titles in the 100y breaststroke (53.79) and 200y breaststroke (1:56.73) while Randall Bal set a meet record in the 100y backstroke (46.35) in winning his third consecutive title. Junior Dan Westcott won the 200y butterfly, clocking in at 1:44.21 while Rogan nabbed his second title in the 200y backstroke (1:40.79).
The Cardinal won relay crowns in the 200y freestyle relay (Bal, Marshall, Jeff Guyman, O'Bryan) with their time of 1:17.24 as well as the 200y medley relay (Bal, Bruce, O'Bryan, Guyman) posting a time of 1:26.46. The 400y medley relay team of Marshall, Bruce, Westcott, Schell took home the title to bring Stanford's total to three.
