LOS ANGELES - A sixth-inning grand slam by sophomore designated player Claire Sua gave UCLA a 5-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Easton Stadium. The Bruins are now 41-6, and improve to 9-3 in the Pac-10, giving them sole possession of first place in the conference race. Washington falls to 37-14 (6-6 Pac-10) with the loss.
Washington made the most of its four hits on the afternoon, drawing first blood, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded double by Kristen Rivera in the top of the fifth inning. UW added an insurance run in the sixth, on a lead-off home run by Kathy Fiske.
UCLA answered in the bottom of the sixth inning. Natasha Watley led off with a single through the right side, and advanced to third on an Amanda Freed single, a rocket up the middle that ricocheted off of UW pitcher Tia Bollinger?s shin before rolling into right field. Leslie Scott then came in to relieve Bollinger, and hit Tairia Mims with the first pitch she threw in the game.
Scott then gave up an RBI single to senior Stacey Nuveman, bringing the Bruins to within 3-1 with the bases loaded and no outs.
Following a second pitching change in the inning. Ashley Boek struck out Stephanie Ramos for the first out of the inning, bringing Sua to the plate. Sua then took a 1-1 pitch well over the right field fence, hitting the roof of the Bruin batting cage beyond the fence in right center field.
Sophomore pitcher Keira Goerl posted the final two of her 13 strikeouts in the seventh inning as she improves to 22-4 on the season.
UCLA will return to action on Friday afternoon at 2 pm at California, before traveling to Stanford for Saturday and Sunday games. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 7 pm, while Sunday?s first pitch is at 1 pm.
