No. 6 California Doubles Up Saint Mary's, 3-0 and 4-0, in Midweek Doubleheader

April 24, 2002

MORAGA, Calif. - No. 6 California (44-14, 8-4 Pac-10) stayed undefeated all-time versus Saint Mary's (13-42), winning in a doubleheader, 3-0 and 4-0, to go to 32-0 in the series. The Golden Bears have won five-consecutive games after dropping a 10-inning, 1-0 loss to then-No. 2 UCLA, April 14.

In the first game, Cal scored a run in the first inning, the only score it would need to collect the Bears' 43rd win of the season. Junior Kristen Morley drew a walk to lead off the inning. She stole second and scored on senior Candace Harper's double to left center.

In the fifth inning, Cal scored insurance runs as Morley, again, led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base. Harper hit an infield single, while junior Veronica Nelson, who went 2-for-2 on the day, took a free pass to load the bases. Courtney Scott and Chelsea Spencer both grounded into a fielder's choice, bringing freshman Jessica Pamanian up to bat. Her grounder just got by the shortstop into shallow left center field, bringing in pinch runner Jessica Vernaglia and Scott to score.

Freshman Cassie Bobrow threw a one hit, complete game shutout in addition to striking out a career-high seven batters for her sixth win of the season.

Kelly Anderson, the starting pitcher in the second game, also shutdown the Gaels as she threw a complete game of her own, striking out five batters, while scattering three hits. She improves to 6-3 on the year.

The Bears scored their first run of the contest in the second inning as Pamanian slapped a one-out single up the middle. Vernaglia followed with a double down the left field line, allowing Pamanian to score from first base. Cal put the game away in the next inning using four hits and a passed ball to score three runs.

Morley reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Harper, who went 3-for-8 on the day, tallied her second double of the day and a team-leading 16th of the season, to give Cal runners on second and third. SMC catcher Jennifer Arnold then allowed a passed ball, scoring Morley and advancing Harper to third.

Nelson singled up the middle scoring Harper for the 3-0 lead. Scott took a free pass while Pamanian reached on a fielder's choice. Vernaglia, who went 2-for-4 in the game, singled to left. Roni Rodrigues brought in the final run of the day as she came through with a base hit.

Pamanian went 3-for-7 with a run and two RBI Wednesday afternoon. Morley swiped two bases and scored two runs on the day.

Cal prepares to host a top-ranked team for the second consecutive week as No. 1 UCLA, who defeated No. 8 Washington Wednesday, 5-3, comes into town Friday at 2 p.m. The Bears also face the Huskies, twice, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
