Softball Sweeps Portland State In Doubleheader At Howe Field

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon softball team swept Portland State in a doubleheader before 186 fans at Howe Field Wednesday afternoon. The Ducks won game one, 7-1 before winning the second game 4-2. With the two wins, Oregon improves to 22-22 overall, 0-12 Pac-10 while Portland State drops to 17-28.
Oregon attacked early in the first game when MariLyn Petrick drove in Andrea Vidlund after Vidlund reached with a single to shortstop. Vidlund finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Petrick was perfect on the day, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored.
Oregon scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Alyssa Laux reached on an error by Portland State and advanced to second on the play. Lynsey Haij advanced Laux to third in Oregon's next at-bat and Vidlund drove in Laux with a double to left field. Petrick then drove in Vidlund with a double center field.
The rest of Oregon's offense came in the fifth inning when it scored four runs on five hits. Petrick, Haij, Laux and Vidlund each scored in the inning, each accounting for one of Oregon's five hits.
Portland State scored its lone run of the game when Nichole Ivie homered over the center field fence.
In the second game, it was the Vikings who led early, scoring a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Applegate that scored Laura Freels.
Portland State tied the game in the sixth inning after loading the bases with just one out. Oregon got the force at home after Annie Peccia's infield hit, but Rachel Manibusan scored on a passed ball in the Vikings' next at bat to tie the game, 2-2.
Oregon quickly took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Kristi Hall reached on an error by Portland State. Tommasini drove in Jessica Luciano, who was pinch running for Hall, with a two-out single to center field. Hutchison, who finished the game with a home run, a single and a triple, scored Tommasini with a triple down the right field line.
That was all the scoring needed as Porltand State was unable to score in the top of the seventh inning.
