Arizona Track & Field Begins Day One of Drake Relays

April 25, 2002

DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Drake University for the 93rd Annual Drake Relays that run from April 25 through April 27. After the first day of competition, the Wildcats have had a good showing with five athletes competing in three different events.

The only member of the women's team to compete thus far has been Chelsea Powell. She ran the 400m intermediate hurdles. In her heat, she placed second with a time of 1:00.60. Unfortunately, this time was not fast enough for her to earn a spot in the final on Friday afternoon.

In men's competition, Jeff Hunter began the day for the Wildcats. He finished sixth in his heat of the 400m intermediate hurdles in a time of 53.53. This time was not fast enough to qualify him for the finals on Friday afternoon. In men's pole vault action, the Wildcats had three athletes competing. Chris Chappell, Mike Mortensen and Kevin Opalka all finished the preliminary competition at a height of 16-2 (4.95m), which qualifies them for Friday afternoon's finals.

Friday's events will begin at 9:55 a.m. CDT for the Wildcats, beginning the women's preliminary heats of the 4x100m relay.
