Lastra, Barnikow and Burdette Advance At Pac-10 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - Stanford women's tennis was well-represented on the first day of singles competition at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., as three athletes advanced to Friday's quarterfinal round after notching two wins each on Thursday.
Lastra, ranked No. 12 nationally, registered consecutive 6-1, 6-2 victories on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals- besting USC's Maureen Diaz and Washington State's Stacy McKenna by identical margins. No. 14 Barnikow improved to 30-7 overall with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Washington State's Orsi Sallai before outlasting Colleen Gray of Washington 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0 in the round of 16. Burdette, who has now won 18 straight matches and is ranked No. 23 in the nation, downed USC's Anita Loyola 6-0, 6-3 and slipped past California's Christina Fusano 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. The only other Cardinal competing in the main draw, sophomore Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, Ohio) fell in her first round match to Washington's Ilona Kordonskaya 6-1, 6-1.
Three Stanford athletes competed in the invitational singles draw on Thursday afternoon, however all were eliminated in their first match of the day. After receiving a first round bye, sophomore Lizzy Bennett dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Washington State's Nora Gaal. Freshmen Kara Guzman (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Story Tweedie-Yates (Redmond, Wash.) also were bounced out on the first day of competition, with Guzman losing 7-5, 6-4 to USC's Caroline Christian and Tweedie-Yates nipped by Kathy Chi of Washington 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
