Men's Golf in Three-Way Tie for Seventh in Pac-10 Championships
April 25, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon struggled in the first round but rallied in the second round to tie for seventh on a windy day in the Pacific-10 Championships, played at the 7,022-yard, par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Course. The Ducks improved eight strokes and carded the third-lowest score in the second round to tie with Arizona State and California.
'We drove the ball into the rough too much today,' said Oregon head coach Steve Nosler. 'You're not going to make too many pars or any birdies when you drive the ball in the rough out here.'
Individually, junior John Ellis led Oregon in both rounds and shot a 71-69-140 to tie for third with USC's Kevin Stadler and Stanford's Blake Mastalir at 4-under. Senior Aaron Byers tied for 16th with 10 other golfers at a plus-1 145. Senior Brandon Harnden finished one stroke behind Byers with a 146 and tied for 26th.
No. 9 USC and host Oregon State tied for first after 36 holes at 716 and finished four strokes ahead of first round leader Stanford (720). Fourth-place Arizona concluded the second round 13 strokes behind the Cardinal with a 733.
'We're not so far back that we can't make a run,' said Nosler. 'We still have a chance to work our way back up and achieve a respectable finish.'
Third round play begins Friday morning.
