Welch Earns All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention Selection
April 25, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State freshman Kim Welch has been named as an All-Pacific-10 Conference women's golf honorable mention selection in voting by the Pac-10 women's golf coaches, Wednesday.
With the honor, Welch becomes the first freshman in WSU women's golf history to be named to the all-conference team.
Welch, who leads the Cougars with a 76.1 scoring average, captured national recognition earlier this month by earning College Player of Week accolades from Golfworld in the magazine's April 5 issue.
Welch earned the honor by virtue of her three-shot victory at the Oregon Duck Invitational, March 29. Welch entered the final round of the tournament tied for second, trailing second-round leader Susannah Laing of the University of San Francisco by three strokes, but the Sacramento, Calif., native overcame the deficit with her final round effort of 70.
Welch steadily improved throughout the tournament, posting rounds of 74-72-70 for an even-par total of 216, three shots ahead of Washington's Lindsey Morgan. The final round 70 tied for the tournament-low round in the 82-player field.
Thus far this season, Welch has posted seven top-14 efforts. Along with her victory at Oregon, the Sacramento, Calif., native captured the Lady Vandal Fall Invitational, Oct. 2. . The win at the Vandal Invite marked the first triumph by a Cougar in a tournament since Kelly Wilson achieved the feat at the Lady Lumberjack Invitational in 1998.
In addition, Welch posted a sixth place finish at the Ram Fall Classic, Sept. 11 and completed the Oregon State Shanico Golf Invitational in a tie for 14th place, Oct. 10. Welch began the spring season with a fifth place effort at the Inland Collegiate, Feb. 18 and then tied for eighth at the Rainbow Invite, March 20.
The tandem of Welch and freshman teammate Jay-Lee Longbottom are ranked as the nation's sixth best freshmen class according to Golfstat's April 19 freshmen class impact ranking.
