Baseball Opens Pac-10 Series With 14-6 Win Against Arizona

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Joey Metropoulos went 4-for-5 with a home run and season-high five RBI while junior Alberto Concepcion went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and two RBI Friday and the USC Trojans defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 14-6, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field.
USC improves to 27-16 overall and remain in first place in the Pac-10 with a 10-3 record while Arizona falls to 27-17 overall and 5-8 in conference play. The Trojans have won seven straight and 15 of their last 18 games.
The Trojans have scored 10 or more runs in their last six games and are hitting .414 during the seven-game winning streak. Six regulars are batting .400 or better during the streak: Bill Peavey, .609 (14-for-23, three doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI); Concepcion, .593 (16-for-27, four doubles, two triples, three home runs, 18 RBI); Michael Moon, .533 (16-for-30, four doubles, one home run, nine RBI); Metropoulos, .480 (12-for-25, one double, three home runs, 16 RBI); Travis McAndrews, .462 (6-for-13, three RBI) and David Gordon, .400 (8-for-20, one double, one home run, nine RBI).
USC took the early lead on Concepcion's ninth home run of the season with a solo shot in the first. Arizona tied the game in the third when Justyn St. Clair scored on a sacrifice fly by Moises Duran.
Concepcion hit an RBI single in the third, followed by a two-run single by Metropoulos and sacrifice fly by junior Anthony Lunetta as the Trojans scored four times in the inning. Gordon hit his first homer of the season with a three-run shot to right in the fifth for an 8-1 lead.
The Wildcats added three in the sixth, but the Trojans answered with four runs in the sixth. Metropoulos hit a two-run homer over the 40-foot fence in left, his ninth of the season.
Junior Anthony Reyes (3-0) had his strongest outing of the season, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits in seven innings of work. Reyes did not allow a walk and struck out six.
Catcher Chris Cunningham went 3-for-4 for the Wildcats, including a two-run homer, his 10th of the season.
