Beavs Remain Tied For Lead At Pac-10s With 18 Holes To Play

April 26, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - -

The Oregon State men's golf team held up under pressure in Friday's third round of the Pac-10 Conference Championships, as the Beavers maintained a share of the lead by shooting a 7-over par 367 at the par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Club.

The Beavers need to win the tournament to continue their season and earn a berth in one of three NCAA Regional Championships.

Stanford used a 363 to move into a tie with OSU after USC vacated its second-round share of a perch atop the leaderboard by posting a 369 Friday to fall to third.

After shooting 3-over 1,083 over the first three rounds, OSU and Stanford own a two-shot cushion over No. 9-ranked USC. After that, there is an 18-shot gap between USC and fourth-place Oregon, at 1,103.

Second-round leader Michael Jurgensen posted a 74 Thursday, falling back into a tie for second with Stanford's Philip Rowe at 4-under 212. Jim Seki of Stanford carded a 72 Friday to move into sole possession of the lead at 210.

With a win, Jurgensen would become the first Beaver to claim the Pac-10 crown since Scott Masingill won in 1971.

The Beavers have three players among the top 12, as sophomore Sean Deacon and senior David Yarnes are among six players tied at 1-over 217.

Deacon had the low round of the day for OSU, carding a 72, while Yarnes signed for his second-consecutive 73 after opening with a 71.

As the day wore on, teams were faced with increasing wind, falling temperatures and precipitation. Perhaps more acclimated to the inclement weather, three of the Northwest schools - Oregon State, Oregon and Washington - fired three of the top four scores on the day.

Washington led the way Friday with a 362 to move up to a tie for seventh, while Oregon shot 365 and OSU 367. The only non-Northwest school among the top four scores Friday was Stanford, who posted a 363.

Rounding out Oregon State's scoring were Chance Holmes (219), Todd Deacon (220) and Daren Greig (225). Holmes and Deacon are tied for 21st and 23rd, respectively, and Greig is knotted at 38th.

Deacon, who carded a 73, had the highlight shot of the day, holing out from 200 yards for eagle on the par-5 14th hole.

Leading Oregon's charge from seventh was Aaron Byers, who carded a 2-under 70 and is tied for seventh at 1-under 215. John Ellis is tied for ninth at even-par 216.

The tournament wraps up Saturday morning with 18 holes. Oregon State tees off from hole-No. 1 with Stanford beginning at 9:36, while Oregon and USC tee off No. 1 beginning at 8:48.
