Cats Blast Ducks, 11-3

TUCSON--Arizona used a 13-hit attack and a big fifth inning to mercy-ruleOregon, 11-3, in Pac-10 softball action Friday night before a crowd of1,127.
The Cats scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to gain the eight-runmargin and shorten the game.
Oregon threatened in the top of the first with a one-out single byJennifer Poore and a base on balls by Alyssa Laux, but UA pitcher JennyGladding struck out Mari Lyn Petrick and retired Andrea Vidlund on a sharpgrounder back to the circle.
UA took a 2-0 lead in the first. Courtney Fossatti singled with one outand Jennie Finch walked to put two runners on.Pitcher Connie McMurren gotLeaneah Manuma to ground to short, moving both runners up, then MackenzieVandergeest looped a single to left to drive in both runs.
Oregon had two aboard in the third after one-out singles by Lynsey Haijand Laux, but Gladding struck out Petrick and Vidlund to end the threat.
UA stretched it to 3-0 in the third when Finch singled and scored whenManuma hit a double that slid past Amber Hutchinson in center field.
Lovie Jung made it 5-0 in the fourth with a home run to left, her 14th ofthe year, after Crystal Farley tripled down the left field line to open theinning. Fossatti followed with a single, and Finch walked again, chasingMcMurren.
Oregon reliever Anissa Meashintubby got an out at the plate when Manumareached on an error but second baseman Laux threw Fossatti out trying toadvance two bases. Meashintubby struck out Vandergeest, but an arror atthird allowed Coburn to reach first and Finch scored an unearned run tomake it 6-0.
Oregon got on the board with a walk by Laux and a two-run home run tocenter by Vidlund in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Kristi Hallreached on an error by UA second baseman Lisha Ribellia and Ashely Richardsfollowed with an RBI double to make it 6-3.
Farley walked and scored on a triple by Jung off the top of the centerfield fence, then Fossatti chopped a single to deep short to score Jung andmake it 8-3. Finch walked. Manuma singled to drive in Fossatti. Vandergeestwalked to load the bases. Jackie Coburn singled to drive in pinch runnerRebekah Quiroz. Gladding hit a fielder's choice to second but Laux's throwto the plate sailed wide and Manuma scored the final run.
UA improved to 42-7 and 9-3 in Pac-10 play while Oregon remained winlessin league action at 0-13 and 19-23 overall. Gladding improved her pitchingrecord to 18-5.
