Men's Golf Climbs to Fourth After Third Round of Pac-10 Championships
April 26, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon got a 2-under 70 from Aaron Byers and even-par 72s from Brandon Harnden and Chris Carnahan Friday to climb to fourth place after the third round of the Pacific-10 Championships, played at the 7,022-yard, par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Course.
The Ducks recorded a 365, the third-lowest score of the day, for the second straight round. After a miserable first round Thursday morning that left Oregon tied for last, the Ducks have clawed their way back into position for an upper division finish.
Oregon State had its worst round of the tournament, a 367, but still managed to hang on to a share of the lead. Stanford had a 363 Friday to move into a tie with the Beavers at 1083. Second-round co-leader USC fell off the pace with a 369 Friday, but the ninth-ranked Trojans are just two strokes back at 1085.
The Ducks are 20 strokes out of the lead at 1103, followed by No. 22 Arizona at 1104 and Washington State at 1105. No. 10 Washington used the lowest round of the day, a 362, to climb from tenth to a tie for seventh with UCLA at 1110. Arizona State was ninth at 1114 and California was tenth at 1122.
Byers, a senior from nearby Albany, Ore., had his best round of the tournament to lower his overall score to 1-under 215. He is tied for seventh with Washington's Brock Mackenzie. John Ellis, who was tied for third after the second round, had a 4-over 76 Friday and fell back to a tie for ninth at even par 216.
Harnden's 72 lifted him to a tie for 18th at 2-over 218, while Carnahan's 72 helped the Albany native move up to a tie for 38th at 9-over 225.
Stanford's Jim Seki kept his individual lead a 6-under 210 with an even par 72 Friday. Philip Rowe, Seki's teammate, and Oregon State's Michael Jurgensen were tied for second at 212. Defending champ Ricky Barnes of Arizona was four stokes off the pace at 214.
Weather permitting, final round play will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
