Records Fall at Cougar Invitational Collegiate Track & Field Meet

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Several meet records and one stadium record fell Friday at the Third Annual Cougar Invitational Collegiate Track & Field Meet.
Former Cougar thrower Andrea Thornton shattered her own meet and Mooberry Track record in the hammer with a winning toss of 204-feet, 6 inches (62.33m). Thornton, a two-time All-American and 2001 WSU graduate, also won the women's discus with a throw of 166-0. She is a volunteer assistant coach with the Cougar throwers and training with WSU throws coach Debra Farwell with plans to qualify for the U.S. Nationals this June at Stanford. Thornton has broken her own Mooberry mark three times, the latest just two weeks ago when she threw the hammer 188-5.
Idaho's Sarah Fischer erased WSU's Molly Monroe's 2000 javelin mark with a throw of 149-7. WSU's Blessing Ufodiama surpassed teammate Cicely Clinkenbeard's 2000 record in the triple jump with a leap of 40-4 3/4 (12.31m). Six women bettered the 3000m steeplechase record with Letiwe Marakurwa winning in a time of 10:44.41.
On the men's side, the Cougar men's 4x100m squad of Bennie Chatman, Anson Henry, Dione Cason, and Anthony Buchanan claimed the meet record with a time of 39.81. Nikela Ndebele of Idaho, broke his own meet record in the 100m dash, finishing Friday in a time of 10.41 seconds. Others etching their names in the meet record book include Tyler Christopher, Athletics Alberta (Canada) in the 400m dash (47.47), Japheth Kimutai (Puma) in the 800m (1:49.28), Kip Kangogo (Athletics Alberta) in the 1500m (3:48.62).
In the field events, former Idaho competitor Hugo Munoz (unattached) tied Matt Alverson's high jump mark with a 6-10 3/4 (2.10m) clearance. Idaho's Simon Stewart eclipsed teammate Joachim Olsen's 2001 shot put record with a throw of 60-2 (18.34m). Kyle Daley, another former Vandal, bettered his own hammer record with a Friday toss of 198-1 (60.38m).
Noteable performances by Cougar competitors included the women's 4x100m relay squad of Tamara Gulley Tiffany Giles, Bree Skinner, and Ellannee Richardson bettered their season-mark with a winning time of 45.80. Giles won the 200m dash with a lifetime-best time of 24.21. Anna Blue won the 1500m with a season-best time but hand-time of 4:38.4. Hillary Smith ran a lifetime-best and Pac-10 qualifying time of 11:01.88, for second place in the steeplechase.
