Rowe's Four-Hitter Tops Stanford

April 26, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ben Rowe pitched a four-hitter to earn Oregon State a 3-1 win over fourth-ranked Stanford in Pacific-10 baseball Friday night. A three-run fourth inning off Stanford All-American Jeremy Guthrie made the Beavers winners in the first night game in the 96-year history of OSU's Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The Beavers (26-14 overall, 5-5 Pacific-10) and Cardinal (28-11, 5-5) continue their series Saturday at 4 p.m. and conclude it Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Rowe pitched the first complete game of the year for OSU, walking none and striking out four in front of a crowd of 912 that turned out despite a rainy afternoon. The only run Rowe allowed was Ryan Garko's leadoff homer in the top of the fourth inning as he outdueled Guthrie, who is likely to be one of the top picks in this year's Major League Baseball draft.

'That reminds me of the days of Andrew Checketts and Scott Nicholson,' OSU coach Pat Casey said, recalling two recent Beaver All-Americans. 'You just sit back and see them make pitch after pitch. We saw the No. 1 righthanded pitcher in the country tonight, and Ben Rowe matched him.'

Guthrie fell to 6-1 this season, losing for the first time in his last 17 starts. It was a dramatic turnaround for Rowe, who had struggled in his last three Pac-10 starts but improved to 6-3 with his efficient 101-pitch effort.

'It was all rhythm,' Rowe said. 'My last three (Pac-10) outings, I'd been out of rhythm - I couldn't find it early, and that's been my downfall. Tonight, I was trying to relax a little more but still keep some intensity, and that's a tough line to find. I'd been too tentative in my last three starts, but tonight I walked that line.'

Pitching the first-ever night game in one of college baseball's oldest ballparks helped the Australian.

'With the facilities in Australia, you don't have many games under the lights,' Rowe said. 'Playing under the lights, with a big crowd - that brings out your best. It's like a game you watch on TV; it's a dream.'

After Garko's homer, the Beavers responded immediately and sent Rowe back to the mound with the lead after scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Biles led off with a double just inside first base and was sacrificed to second by Brian Barden; he had to stay at third when Andy Jarvis grounded out.

But Seth Pietsch looped a single into left-centerfield to drive in the tying run, then Wick Udy singled through the left side. J.R. Runyon grounded a single up the middle to plate the go-ahead run; after Will Hudson walked to load the bases, Tom Creighton drew a four-pitch walk to make it 3-1.

'To have that run support was fantastic,' Rowe said. 'The guys did a heck of a job against a guy who's going to be the first righthanded pitcher taken in the draft.'

Rowe didn't strike out a hitter in the final 3 2/3 innings, getting flyout after flyout. After Garko's homer, he retired 13 hitters in a row and 15 of the next 16.

Looking for the first complete game of his career, Rowe would face the second through fourth hitters in the Cardinal order in the ninth inning. Sam Fuld started the inning with a fly ball into the leftfield corner; Pietsch raced back and made a diving catch to rob Fuld of an extra-base hit.

'For Pietsch to make that catch was huge - I can't put it in words,' Rowe said.

Garko then singled down the rightfield line, and with two out Quentin Carlos grounded an infield single to shortstop to put the tying runs on base. Rowe fell behind Danny Putnam two balls, no strikes, but Putnam lifted the next pitch to centerfield and Aaron Mathews put it away for the final out.

The victory came five days after the Beavers had lost a three-run lead in the late innings against UCLA to drop a Pac-10 series against the Bruins.

'The whole club was down,' Casey said. 'But this has been a resilient group all year, and the guys who have been the core of this club made sure found a way for us to come back. And this crowd was great. They understood they were watching a pitchers' duel, and they were just great for us.'
