Baseball Pushes Win Streak To Eight Games With 12-10 Victory

LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Michael Moon (Alta Loma/Rancho Cucamonga HS) went 4-for-4 with a double, home run and career-high five RBI Saturday and the USC Trojans defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 12-10, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. Nick Mosich (Santa Ana/Santa Margarita HS/Notre Dame) added a 2-for-5 performance with two home runs and three RBI for the Trojans, who have won eight straight and 16 of their last 19 games.
USC improves to 28-16 overall and remains in first place with an 11-3 conference record, 2 1/2 games ahead of second place Arizona State and Washington. Arizona falls to 27-18 overall and 5-9 in Pac-10 play.
Arizona opened in the first with an unearned run when shortstop Brad Hassey scored on a wild pitch by Trojan starter Matt Chico. USC answered with two in the bottom of the inning with a bases-loaded groundout by senior first baseman Bill Peavey and sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter Joey Metropoulos. Mosich hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot to right in the second, followed by Moon's two-run double to right center for a 5-1 lead.
The Wildcats scored twice in the third on an RBI single by third baseman John Hardy and run-scoring fielder's choice by designated hitter Ken Riley.
USC exploded for six runs in the third, chasing Arizona starter Marc Kaiser. Mosich hit his second home run of the game with a two-run shot to center, followed later in the inning by Moon's three-run homer to right. Kaiser took the loss, giving up nine runs in 2 2/3 innings with six walks and one strikeout.
Arizona scored six runs in the middle innings with Chris Cunningham hitting his second homer in as many days with a two-run home run in the fourth, his 11th of the season.
Trojan reliever Brett Bannister (5-2) threw the final 3 1/3 innings in relief to get the victory, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Peavey saw his hitting streak snapped at 17 games with an 0-for-3 performance while Moon pushed his streak to 12 games, hitting .500 (26-for-52) with two home runs and 16 RBI.
