Huskies' Sprint Medley Earns Victory at Drake Relays
April 27, 2002
DES MOINES, Iowa - Washington's Shavon Hawkins, LeTesha Moore, Kelsey Sheppard and Courtney Inman today teamed to win the sprint medley relay title at the 93rd-anuual Drake Relays, which concluded Saturday after three days of competition by over 8,000 athletes from 86 countries.
The title was the second for Washington in the meet's three days. Senior Mike Hill earned a dramatic victory Thursday in the steeplechase.
Inman, who was outleaned at the line in a photo finish in Friday's distance medley relay, faced no such challenge Saturday, holding off Tulsa's Monica Joaness for a half-second victory. Washington finished in 3 minutes, 56.29 seconds to better the Horned Frogs' 3:57.00 second-place mark.
Hawkins, a senior from Aurora, Colo., ran the first leg of the relay, which consists of two legs of 200 meters, followed by a 400-meter leg and an 800-meter leg. Moore ran the second leg before passing to Pac-10 qualifier Sheppard, who then passed to Inman for the stretch run.
Not to be outdone, the Husky men's distance medley relay squad of Eric Garner, Cristian Adams, Todd Arnold and Jeremy Park placed sixth in 9:52.55, just five seconds behind champion Northern Iowa, who finished in 9:47.30.
Arnold returned shortly after the distance medley to compete at 1500 meters, placing eighth in 3:55.64. Arnold was the Huskies' most active athlete over the three days of Drake competition, participating in three relays in addition to the 1500 meters.
On the women's side, freshman Lindsey Egerdahl placed 12th at 1500 meters, crossing the line in 4:44.77. Triple jumper Marcus Kelly was Washington's lone remaining individual competitor at the meet, placing 13th with a leap of 47-0 3/4.
