Lastra Moves Into Singles Final At Pac-10 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - Senior Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.) defeated teammate Erin Burdette (Jackson, Ga.) 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at the 2002 Pac-10 Women's Tennis Championships to advance to Sunday's championship match. No. 10 Lastra, who has now won 16 consecutive matches, will face USC's No. 7 Jewel Peterson for the singles title.
Four other Cardinal athletes- Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, Ohio), Lizzy Bennett (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Kara Guzman (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Story Tweedie-Yates (Redmond, Wash.)- were in competition on Saturday afternoon in invitational action.
In consolation singles action, Anderson bested Arizona State's No. 68 Mhairi Brown 6-4, 6-1, while Tweedie-Yates notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Washington's Amy Allen. Bennett dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Bernaditte Bayani of USC in her round of 32 match.
On the doubles side, the duo of Anderson and Tweedie-Yates registered an 8-4 win over UCLA's Catherine Hawley and Sarah Gregg in the invitational round. Washington's Kathy Chi and Andrea Coulter ousted Stanford's Bennett and Guzman by an 8-4 count in consolation play.
